About
Suriyaa Sundararuban
Suriyaa /Soo-REE-yah/ noun the sun; sunlight. From Sanskrit सूर्य (sūrya).
On a mission to empower 1 billion humans to make the world a better place through technology and entrepreneurial experimentation.
Who Suriyaa is
Suriyaa has spent 10+ years writing software that hundreds of millions of people actually use: Firefox, Bitcoin, Python, and the code NASA flew on Mars. He has spent 6+ years building on Open Source projects and scaling companies, and since 2020/21 writing micro-checks to friends and inspiring founders in his network.
Born in Bavaria and raised in Munich after his family lost everything in the Sri Lankan civil war. Giving back was never optional. In January 2023 he took the Giving What We Can 10% Pledge, and the streak has stayed uninterrupted.

Origins
Sri Lanka, then Germany with nothing
His parents lost everything during the Sri Lankan civil war and arrived in Germany with nothing. Bavaria became a true home. Childhood wasn't easy at all. Poverty was the starting condition, not the story he intended to keep living.
An Asian film, Sivaji: The Boss, left a sharper imprint than any textbook: take action on high-impact problems because others will not; lead by example; be a role model to builders even when the path is uphill.

From age 11 · 2013-present
First line of code, then code that ships
He wrote his first line of code at eleven. By his teens he was contributing upstream: Firefox, MediaWiki, Bitcoin and Ethereum tooling, Python, and NASA flight software. The point was never a follower count. It was reached with small steps through autodidactic learning and contributing to a bigger cause.

The 10% Pledge
Effective giving did not require extraordinary wealth. It required systems, habits, and follow-through. Regular gifts go to evidence-backed organizations like AMF, GiveDirectly, and Malaria Consortium.
Take action because others won't. Lead by example. Be a role model, even if you have to overcome obstacles to do so.

Now
Dreaming bigger, Building forward
- Building on early-stage ideas that might turn into moonshots (even when people say you can't do it)
- Backing driven founders before the crowd arrives (even when they are not yet famous)
- Shipping code that reaches real users (even when it is not yet popular)
- Giving back, uninterrupted, to what actually works (even when it is not yet the norm)
Bullish on technology.
Bullish on humanity.
Pessimism is easy and has never built anything. Suriyaa takes the other side of that trade. Technology is the strongest lever we have for problems that actually prevent people from thriving, and the builders pointing it at those problems deserve someone who is all in.
So he goes long. On technology. On the founders chasing problems that scare everyone else off. And on a future that is measurably better than today. That is the entire thesis, and he is not hedging it.

Don't take Suriyaa's word for it
Great people Suriyaa has worked with, in their own words.
Every one of these people bet on Suriyaa before it was obvious. None of them regret it.
